When construction on the Bushman Sands Golf Course began in 2003, new economic life was breathed into the sleepy farm town of Alicedale. Built on the banks of the Bushmans and the New Years rivers, golfers are lead onto various sides of the river banks throughout play.

The game tees off over an active railway line, moves to the double green shared by the 2nd and 5th hole, then over undulating fairways and pot bunkers, and finishes on the 18th with a drive over the small cemetery in the fairway’s centre. Bushman Sands is a friendly course that is a welcome development to the area.

The 18-hole championship course has been designed by South African golfing legend, Gary Player. The course follows the banks of the Bushmans and New Years Rivers, resembling the game’s earliest “links” courses in Scotland with undulating fairways and pot bunkers.

Unique features include playing the first stroke over the railway line, a double green (1400 sq.m) shared by the 2nd and 5th holes, crossing the Bushman. This course is a welcome addition to the area.

FROM PORT ELIZABETH Alicedale is approximately one hour from Port Elizabeth towards Cradock. Take the N2 from Port Elizabeth towards Grahamstown, at the interchange to Grahamstown, continue straight on the N10 towards Cradock. 80 kilometers from Port Elizabeth, 11 km past Paterson turn right at the Alicedale sign and follow the road for another 17 kilometers into Alicedale
